A huge happy International Women’s Day to all the ladies out there!
Whether cis/trans/intersex/any other gender identifier- today is a day for the celebration of female identifying people! If you can, take some time out of the day to celebrate the women in your life, and if you’re a women – celebrate yourself!
I like to think of IWD as a recharge day, a chance to celebrate how far we’ve come and the work we’ve done so far. Those of us living in NZ have so much to thank the First Wave feminists who fought for our right to vote, the Second Wave feminist who fought in the 1970’s for reproductive rights, and the Third Wave feminists who fight hard for diversity and inclusion in the feminist movement.
However, I think it’s also a time to regroup, and consider what work we can be doing to push for women’s rights in our own lives. Personally, I’ve very aware of my own privilege as a white New Zealander, and I’m really pushing myself to stand back and listen to women of colour and their experiences as women. I have a long way to go (especially on my journey to learning te reo), but it’s something I think is vitally important as a feminist in New Zealand.
For you (whoever you may be who’s reading this), it could be using your own platform to rise other women up, talking to a woman in your life who’s experiences may be different to your own, or any other important facet of being a woman and a feminist in the 21st century.
Most of all, bask in today. Hopefully your life has been full of support and celebration for IWD today – I know my Facebook feed has been packed full of messages of love for women. We women often take too little time to really celebrate ourselves, so while you celebrate those around you, make sure to take some time for the work you do in your life. Whether you are a full-time mum, student, formal waged worker, any combination of the former, or none of the former – celebrate what you do. The work we do is valid, and often unappreciated. Take the time today to appreciate it in yourself, and other women.
For the men reading – this goes for you too. Celebrate your mums, sisters, partners, teachers, grandmothers, daughters. Celebrate all women. It’s not every day (literally) that we get a day dedicated to us.
Also, if you haven’t already, check out the Google Doodle for today – the art and expression is beautiful!
Happy IWD 💕
